Breaking all the rules

Brides are fast changing wedding "rules". According to the WeddingChannel.com, brides are creating new rules that include:

RULE 1: GENDER-BENDING THE BRIDAL PARTY

Man of honor or best woman? An overwhelming 63% of WeddingChannel.com brides would ask their best friend to be a bridesman or man of honor if they were a guy. While there are no rules regarding attire, Kleinfeld Bridal co-owner and WeddingChannel.com fashion expert Mara Urshel suggests you play it safe but chic.

"When it comes to what to wear, a bridesman should wear a tie, pocket kerchief, and boutonniere to match the bridesmaid dresses and bouquets. As for the groomswoman, it's best if she wears the same color as the bridesmaids, but not the same dress nor the same flowers."

RULE 2: FRIENDLY OFFICIATE

Another growing trend is asking someone other than a clergyman to officiate your wedding. According to a WeddingChannel.com poll, 59% of couples would be interested in having a friend or family member officiate. The process is fairly simple: A friend or family member registers online, they pay a fee (which ranges between $15-40), and an official certificate is mailed out to them.

"Make sure whoever you choose to officiate your wedding understands the style of the ceremony, their responsibilities, and is up to the challenge," advises Yifat Oren, WeddingChannel.com style expert and wedding planner to the stars. "An ideal officiate is not only someone who is important to the bride and groom, but is articulate and capable of handling such an important event. Couples should offer to help write the ceremony content to ensure there won’t be any last-minute surprises."

RULE 3: THE NAME GAME

Torn as to whether or not you should take your future husband's last name? Over 12% of WeddingChannel.com brides say they're keeping their own while 3% insist they're open to blending both their last name with their groom's. If you're not sure how that sounds you can test it out with the WeddingChannel.com's Name Game Tool (www.weddingchannel.com/thenamegame.html).

RULE 4: ALTERNATIVE REGISTRIES

Already have a food processor and a crock pot? Many couples are opting to create wedding registries for their honeymoon or favorite charitable causes. When registering on WeddingChannel.com you have the option of starting a charitable registry in your name for organizations like the ASPCA or the Red Cross. Your wedding guests can then make donations in your name to your charity of choice. You can also create the ultimate honeymoon registry with the help of companies like Cloud 9 or Traveler's Joy. Couples can register for everything from horseback riding lessons to spa treatment -- just keep in mind not everyone might be comfortable with your alternative registry choices. WeddingChannel.com editors suggest that you do create one normal registry to placate your traditional wedding guests.

It's easy to be green

You hear about it everywhere - recycle, save the environment. We are all more aware than even a year ago. Well, brides are listening too, and this year it is stylish to be "green".

Carlson Craft® has heard the call and has created a collection called Naturally Ever After with wedding invitations made with at least 30% post consumer fibers.

I know what you are thinking - these wedding invitations must look like brown paper bags, or have those specs of dirty looking paper in them making them look faded. Well that's not the case at all.

Check out this invitation called Calla Lilly Connection. It features beautiful white calla lilies with an embossed flourish over the top of the flowers. The invitation is printed in raised ink so you still have the same high quality printing as other wedding invitations.

©Carlson Craft Calla Lilly Connection

You can also get all of the other features that come with standard wedding invitations like lined envelopes and a printed return address on the outer envelopes. The best thing too is that the price is comparable to any other wedding invitation. For instance, the Calla Lilly Connection is about $1.85 per invitation when you order 100.

Recycled wedding invitations also are available in trendy colors. Chocolate or mocha is one of the hottest colors this year and combined with yellow, blue or pink creates a beautiful palette for your summer wedding. Use the lighter color inks on the Simply Mocha wedding invitation from Carlson Craft.

You can also cut down on the amount of paper you use by choosing a seal-n-send wedding invitation. This style of invitation includes a postcard-style respond card attached to the bottom of your wedding invitation that your guests tear off and mail back to you. The respond and invitation fold up and are sealed with a small seal and mailed as one piece. There are no envelopes used. A perfect example is the Faded Floral Seal-N-Send wedding invitation made with recycled paper.

So if you are a bride and groom that pride yourselves in doing your part to save our planet, consider going green for your wedding invitations. For more wedding invitations in the Naturally Ever After collection, visit http://www.invitocards.cceasy.com/

Wedding Registry Just for Men

I think it's a genius idea that this company has come up with a men's registry. Instead of trying to recap the article, I thought it best to just repost in its entirety. The link to the original article is at the bottom.

Article from STLToday.com

Combining a wedding registry tailored toward men with a wealth of how-to resources makes TheManRegistry.com a one-stop shop for grooms

The Man Registry, LLC, an online wedding resource provider for grooms has launched the world's first wedding registry and informational resource designed specifically for men - http://www.themanregistry.com. While most grooms have typically been left out of the wedding planning process, TheManRegistry.com is poised to change that. This unique website puts men in the driver's seat, providing couples with the ability to register for gifts that appeal to grooms and help engage them in the wedding process.

The centerpiece of TheManRegistry.com is a specialized gift registry featuring hundreds of gifts tailored toward grooms, including barbeque grills and accessories, bar supplies, tools, sporting equipment, and even items for favorite MLB teams just to name a few. Best of all - all of these items can be purchased directly from the website and shipped directly to the customer. To view our selection of products, click here http://www.themanregistry.com/Products.aspx

"We offer hundreds of products geared specifically toward men," says Christopher Easter, co-founder of The Man Registry, LLC. "With TheManRegistry.com, grooms can register for a wide variety of items that interest them, ranging from bar glasses to power tools."

In addition to the registry, the website also offers a wealth of information, how-to articles, and resources designed to help successfully guide the 1.25 million men who get married each year through every step of the engagement, wedding, and honeymoon planning processes. To view our 'Groom 101' section, click here http://www.themanregistry.com/groom101.aspx

"We understand that grooms have a lot of questions when it comes to weddings, whether it's how to select the perfect engagement ring or give a memorable toast at the reception, and TheManRegistry.com will help them easily navigate the wedding process and have fun at the same time. TheManRegistry.com is truly the ultimate, one-stop resource for grooms," Easter says.

About The Man Registry

Three brothers started TheManRegistry.com in 2007 when they noticed that many of their close friends and family were getting married, but too often only registered for gifts that were strictly geared toward the bride. It was clear that launching a wedding registry tailored specifically with the groom in mind was necessary. As a result, they created TheManRegistry.com as a comprehensive online resource for grooms, which not only allows them to register for gifts that appeal to men, but also offers a breadth of tips and advice to guide them through the wedding planning process.

For more information, contact Christopher Easter at 618-980-3152 or ceaster@themanregistry.com.

Wedding Week on NECN

©Carlson Craft Wedding Cake Charms
On New England Cable News in Massachusetts, they are currently celebrating "Wedding Week" on their morning show Good Morning Live. As part of their first segment, they are featuring the latest trends in wedding cakes.

Brides are using colors, incorporating wedding themes and choosing flavorful cakes to truly make them their own. Here are a few of the current trends:

Elegant styles with clean lines and fresh flowers including hydrangeas, roses, orchids, etc. are the wedding cake of choice.

Brides are selecting cakes with vibrant colors. Popular colors for spring are hot pinks, tangerine oranges and apple greens.

Inspiration from the sea. Nautical wedding cakes are decorated in crisp navy blues with white and are adorned with starfish, sailor's knots, lighthouses and more.

Shades of brown, such as taupe, chocolate and mocha, are still very popular wedding colors. These rich shades complement lighter tones of pink, lavender and yellow. Choose cool blues and sage greens to go with chocolate brown wedding cake for a winter wedding.

Brides are using multiple cakes in different flavors and set up in a buffet station style to allow guests to choose their favorites. They are also moving beyond traditional wedding cakes and choosing cupcake cakes or incorporating other pastries like cookies.

Couples are also choosing unique flavor combinations as well. Think beyond a white cake with filling. Raspberry Key Lime and Chocolate Paradise are new flavors that are popular.

Fashion for the Groom

Believe it or not, wedding fashion is not just about the bridal gown. Those guys have a lot of choices to make too. Choosing a tuxedo is more than double breasted vs. tailcoat, or what color cummerbund to wear. Men have more fashion choices now than ever before and it makes for a beautiful wedding unique to his style.

Here is a breakdown of some of the choices you make when choosing men's formal wear for your wedding. Hopefully this will help you be a little prepared when you visit your retailer.

Coat Style

Traditionally, there were three types of coats to choose from. There was the morning coat, also known as a cutaway, for weddings scheduled before 4:00 PM. The tuxedo was for "black tie" formal weddings, usually in the evening. And then there was the tailcoat for the most formal, or "white tie" weddings and it was traditionally worn with a white pique shirt, vest and tie. Now, the formal traditions have been lost and people choose almost any style for any time of the day.

The tuxedo looks like a business suit coat with a satin lapel and one or two buttons in the front. It is worn open with a cummerbund or vest and bow tie. Most tuxedo stores can tell you if the coat you considering is European or traditionally cut. A European cut tuxedo is tapered inward around the waist, and works better for men who are athletically built with broad shoulders and narrower waists.

A double breasted tuxedo has six buttons on the front with three running down each side. The coat is worn closed and buttoned with a cummerbund and bow tie. This style is great for men who want to hide their waistline.
The tailcoat is short in the front and has "tails" that are longer in the back. This is the most formal style tuxedo and is worn best with a vest and bow tie. Tall, slender men look best in tails.

Tuxedos traditionally come in 3 collar styles. They are peak, shawl and notch. They are exactly as they sound. The peak lapel points upward, the notch has a notch cut out of the side (like a business suit), and the shawl is a rounded collar. The collars are usually satin or trimmed in satin.

Many tuxedo stores offer some contemporary style tuxedos such as a long coat with 4-7 buttons in front. Some have shorter collars, and some are collarless. Also, instead of a bow tie, you can choose an ascPalermo Tuxedo at Tuxedojunction.comot or you can get ties that simply button in front in a short length without the bow.

Color

Tuxedos are not just black or white. Most wedding professionals carry colors like grey, blue, and chocolate brown - a favorite wedding color this year. You can also choose pin stripes or different fabric materials.

A word of advice - try to stay away from 100% polyester tuxedos. Most tuxedos of quality are a cotton/poly or wool/poly blend which is more comfortable for your wedding party.

Tuxedo shirts

Tuxedo shirts also come in three basic styles. There is the wing collar, which has two short pointed ends that are folded down over the bow tie. There is the lay down collar which is like a regular dress shirt collar. And then there is the mandarin collar which is a collar that hugs the neck without any pointed ends. Mandarin collars can be worn with a stud at the neck instead of a bow tie.

Most tuxedo shirts are pleated in the front. A pique (say "Peekay") shirt is not pleated but has pique material in the front section of the shirt. Pique material is textured - think of the texture of golf shirt material.

Tuxedo shirts have two sets of button holes. One set is to button your shirt closed - usually clear or white buttons. The second set is for your studs and cuff links to go through to finish off the look of your tuxedo. Most rentals come with studs and cuff links.

Ties, Cummerbund, Vests

Every tuxedo is completed with tie and cummerbund or vest. Typically a bow tie is used, but there are other styles available such as the ascot or a traditional tie. An ascot is wider than a regular tie.

Cummerbunds and vests come in all sort of colors and patterns. It's best to take samples of your wedding colors when choosing a tuxedo if you want to match them. Cummerbunds are pleated and wrap around the waist. Most rental vests are open in the back and are adjustable around the neck and waist.

Tuxedo Accessories

Yes, men have wedding fashion accessories too. One of my favorites is the pocket square. This is just a square piece of fabric that is folded and tucked into the front pocket of the tuxedo. It's a great way to incorporate your wedding color without overdoing it.

And if you want to go all out, your tuxedo rental store will have scarves, gloves, canes and hats available for the men in your wedding party.

Shoes

Don't forget about shoes! Most men rent shoes with their wedding tuxedo. Most formal shoes are patent leather in a slip-on or string-up style. However, some formal wear stores now supply leather rental shoes in more contemporary styles.

Final tips

Take time when choosing your tuxedos for your wedding. Give yourself at least a few hours to look through the styles and make choices. Compare styles and pricing at different stores.

Make sure all of your men have their measurements into the rental store at least a month before your wedding.

And, if you remember nothing else, please remember this one. Make sure every man in your bridal party tries his tuxedo on before leaving the store with it. Rental stores can make last minute alterations to make sure your entire wedding party looks perfect in their tuxedos.

Wedding receptions for the budget conscious

I have a co-worker who is getting married this year, and I was surprised to find out that she decided to have a spaghetti feed for her wedding reception.

"Food is just so expensive", she said. "I can go to Costco and get everything I need for spaghetti for a few hundred dollars instead of spending a few thousand. All I need is a few volunteers to help make it." And I totally understood her logic.

When planning a wedding, the reception may seem to be the biggest challenge. What should you serve? What's appropriate for the time of day and for your guests who are attending? Do you want a formal or casual dining experience for your guests?
©Carlson Craft Scroll Menu / Place Card
The first thing you need to be aware of is that some reception venues require that you use their preferred caterer. When you choose a location, be sure to find out if there are any catering restrictions. They will tell you this up front and it will be in the contract. If you are fine with the budget requirements and selections of their caterer, your work may be done.

If you are little more budget conscious, here are a few creative options for your wedding reception:

Go to Costco or Sams club for your food. They have sandwich trays if you want something casual and easy, or you can do a spaghetti feed like my coworker. They also have plenty of dips, chips, crackers, olives, cheeses, etc. for hors' douvres. Costco prints a cookbook annually with lots of unique and formal dining options all made from products they carry - usually distributed at the store the day after Thanksgiving.

Ask some of your family members to help you with a pot luck style reception. Have them bring favorite recipes to share like salads, soups, and side dishes. You can provide a main entree to go with them like a favorite chicken recipe or sirloin steaks.

You can rent a chocolate fountain for a fun and formal treat. Purchase the chocolate and fruit for dipping from your grocer.

Have your grocery store make your wedding cake instead of having a designer cake. Use separate cakes instead of purchasing a tiered cake. Use boxes or stands at different levels (covered with a tablecloth of course) to give them a more elegant presentation and decorate around your cake table with fresh flowers.

If your wedding is mid-day, or late evening, feed your guests hors' douvres instead of an entire meal. You can use inexpensive choices that taste great and can be fixed by your wedding helpers like pigs in a blanket or crackers with spread. You can find great items in the freezer section of your grocery, Sams or Costco like mini quiches, pot stickers, or taquitos.

Do you have a great idea to share with the budget conscious bride? Feel free to post it here and share!

Goodbye Cinderella, Hello Sexy!

Brides are not living in fairy tales when choosing their wedding dress this year. It's more about sleek and sexy style.

Many bridal shop owners have mentioned they are seeing less and less ball gowns chosen. The hot style? Think mermaid. The wedding dress is fitted at the top and the middle but flares at the bottom. This look creates a clean, body hugging silhouette.

But what if you want the look of sleek Hollywood glamour without enhancing your butt? You can choose a fitted top with an a-line shape without too much flare. This still allows for a sexy silhouette without the big dress, and will show off your best curves.

Lace has also returned this year. For many years wedding dresses have been all about big with heavy beading. Now its more about romantic lace details with ornate trim around the bodice, sleeves and hem. Another choice is to have the entire dress covered in lace without the heavy bead work. One popular style, mentioned by David's Bridal, is a trumpet style dre©Alfred Angelo Wedding Dressss with lace appliques.

And what if you still want to look like Cinderella? Ball gown style wedding dresses are still around, but many have been cut down to a slimmer profile this year. Mary's Bridal is well known for their Fairy Tale Wedding collection which is always has a few ballroom style gowns.

White and Ivory are still the traditional choices of color, but many brides are choosing color accents on their wedding dresses such as red, blue or champagne. Popular designers like David's Bridal and Alfred Angelo have dresses where you can choose the color accent like in the photo shown here.

So brides, think sexy when you shop for your wedding dress and feel beautiful on your wedding day.
